Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome to the second semester!  Now that the holidays are finished we can focus in on the diving deeply into the curricula as we get closer to the end of the year.  There’s about 82 school days left this year for us to work with the kids.  We will help them grow and develop!

We are glad there wasn’t a snow day today, but we definitely could have done without the bitter temperatures.  As a reminder, the students go outside for recess whenever the temperature / wind chill is about 20 degrees.  The only exception to this would be if there is precipitation covering the playground.  With this in mind, please make sure you send your children with winter coats, gloves, and hats each day so they can stay warm at recess.

The Mehlville Board of Education recently approved the addition of two programs to help our students become better mathematicians.  Every student now has access to an internet application called Front Row.  Front Row is a personalized approach to teaching math, and it is responsive to each individual child’s progress.  The kids enjoy the program because for each activity they successfully finish they are awarded coins to upgrade their computer character.

The second part of the Board’s plan was to hire math interventionists to assist kids in fourth and fifth grades.  We selected Ms. Caroline Decker as our interventionist, and she will begin working at Wohlwend next week.  Ms. Decker is a recent graduate from Truman State University, with a Master’s Degree in Education.  She student taught at Dressel Elementary in the Lindbergh School District during the fall semester.  Ms. Decker was here today to meet with teachers and kids as she transitions into her new role.  After some training next Tuesday and Wednesday, Ms. Decker will begin working with students on Thursday, January 18th

Thank you to PAWS for their awesome support this week!  At the meeting on Wednesday night, the group approved the purchase of several Chromebooks to be used by the classroom teachers and students.  They also approved to have two new skateboarding Wildcat signs made this coming summer, along with approving us to purchase some additional supplies for the classrooms.  These purchases wouldn’t be possible without you parents (and grandparents) who assist us as we fundraise for the school!

Speaking of PAWS, next Friday, January 19th is our first Mother-Daughter Bingo Night.  The event runs from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM in the school gym.  We are in need of volunteers to help make the night a complete success.  Therefore, we are calling on the kids’ dads to volunteer (just like the moms do for Father-Daughter Dance!).  We need assistance selling soda, cupcakes, and with the 50/50.  Please contact Brittany Bub at

Kindergarten Registration for students coming to school in August 2018 takes place the week of January 22nd.  Any student who will be five years old before August 1, 2018, is welcome to register to attend school next year.  Please pass the word to your family, friends, and neighbors so they can become Wildcats!  Parents should set a registration appointment by calling the office at 467-6500.

Here’s a calendar of upcoming events:
